And here we are, the start of another week.
Stew's off to work soon, and I'm still in bed.
But not for long.
I'm getting up shortly, cos I have a few jobs to do.
Someone suggested I leave a few things lying around in the house during Open Homes, to make it look 'lived in'?
Like... I am at a loss to think what to leave lying around, without it looking untidy! I don't do 'untidy' at all.
Even when we had multitudes of kids at home, my home was always tidy! I hate a mess.
But... I'm going to give it some thought, on how I can make it look more 'lived in'.
Any ideas/suggestions?
ABOVE: It was wonderful to see the kids playing outside yesterday. Usually those boys have their faces glued to a screen, either a big one or a small one.
ABOVE: Lily just LOVES her Jolly Jumper, add a ball pit? You have sheer, unadulterated JOY. She's so special, such a happy, happy baby girl.Today, once up, I shall do the housework, before heading into the sewing room to finish the next two Red/Green Braid Runners. They need quilting, then binding put on.
That will probably take me all morning.
9.48 am.
I was about to step into the shower and... Bex walks in the front door!
Whoops. Whip me nightie back on, and go out to be sociable.
She'd stopped in to pick up their sunscreen. They are all very fair skinned, and need sunscreen.
So we spent a bit of time chatting.
I told her about wanting to make the house look more 'lived in'.
The SINGLE thing she could suggest was this:
ABOVE: We took the plates and glasses off the dining table, and reverted it back to how I always have it, just a couple of little plants on it. Well, plus me big glass jar. That was one of the very few things I did to 'stage' the house. Besides declutter.
The only other thing I can think of doing to make it more lived in, is this:
ABOVE: Maybe? I leave the the kitchen bins where they are? Usually we put them in the garage.
As for the rest of the house... Bex and I can't think of what else I can do. It is and always will be a super tidy house.
It was so weird having Miss Lily crawling all around the house this morning! One minute she was with us in the family room, next thing she's about to go into the garage! So damn cute.
I am now going to the mall. I want to get a second pair of summer footwear, I've only got one pair of jandals right now, and shit they hurt my feet yesterday.
It is now 12.55 pm, and I have just arrived home from the shops.
I went to Farmers at the Base for some more 3/4 lightweight tights... went to pay and BUGGER!
My bank card was in Stew's wallet. So I had to drive into town to collect it.
That was annoying, so when I got back to the mall I went into the bank to order a 2nd card.
When we go out on the weekends, I usually just give Stew my card, so I don't have to lug around my packpack/handbag.
So, after ordering the new card, I continued on with my shopping.
I went to Postie for a couple of cheap, cotton nighties.
Then on to the shoe shops. There's quite a few at The Base.
I ended up getting some Skechers, cos they were the most comfortable, and lightweight.
I also stopped in at the supermarket, cos I've decided to bake cookies just before an Open Home. Thanks for the suggestion. We used to always bake fresh bread for an Open Home, but I don't want to do that now.
ABOVE: I bought heaps more Gnocchi, cos we love it. These packets are only a couple of bucks, whereas if you buy it 'freshly' made in the refrigerated section of the supermarket, it's like $8+. No brainer buying it like this, cos it keeps in the pantry, and only takes 2 minutes in boiling water to cook.
ABOVE: Ignore me ugly feet! No one has pretty feet. These are the summer jandals I've been wearing. Two days of wearing them, and BOOM! Already got a damn popped blister. AND I keep tripping up in them, had a couple of almost falling flat on my face moments today.
I don't think I am going to keep them.
Now, back to Open Home Suggestions.
Some I might take on.
Marie: I agree, it is our home, and it is how we live.
Yes Lynda, I will take the big glass jar off the table. It hinders conversation as it is a bit big.
I will find somewhere else to have it.
ANON: I will not be ADDING anything else to the house... I've spent months decluttering it!
Christmas is coming, so I might put JUST A FEW Christmassy things out in a week or two. But I think that will be all I 'add'.
And now, it is 1.15 pm, and I'm starving. So I'll have some lunch then FINALLY get into the sewing room. Those runners ain't gunna finish themselves, right?
5.05 pm: I've spent the rest of the afternoon tweaking shit. Still not got into the sewing room, and it's looking likely I won't. I've got all week to finish them, so no biggie.
Well, I feel like it's been a good day. I did some small adjustments around the house, but nothing too drastic. I don't think it will make any difference in the long run. We just have to wait for the right person/people to come through our door, who love our home.
End of story.
Off to bed soon, so catch ya tomorrow.
I don’t agree with the “lived in” comment. If you are the tidy person, you do you. People are looking beyond “lived in” when looking for a home, the one you looked at the other week which was a rubbish tip is the exception. Marie, Melbourne
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of a magazine on a coffee table and maybe a runner ready for hand stitching in a basket by your chair. That kind of thing. I know you like your house spotless, lucky you can't see mine ATM. I feel yuck. Where's my blanket?
ReplyDeleteI do have books on the coffee table. I have my current runners, not completed, out in the sewing room. I don'd hand stitch a bloody thing! And I don't make blankets... who is this?
DeleteWhat fun the little ones are having!
ReplyDeleteYour house is "lived in" by a very tidy person - don't try and make it any other way - it is you (and Stew). All of your pictures and ornaments are still in place and that is what makes a house a home. When we sold our house we were surprised that the real estate agent said leave it as it is because we had been told by various people that we would have to "showcase" it. Audrey
ReplyDeleteWhen we had to sell our house, the realtor suggested "home-y" scents. Like the smell of fresh baked bread (I had a bread machine so that was a win for me) or apples in a crockpot with lots of cinnamon (and maybe some red wine too for a "relax me it's over" drink for later)
ReplyDeleteNo, it's lived in enough - people need to imagine themselves living there not someone else. I'm not sure about the jar on the dining table though, it's is just too big (in my humble opinion). Also all the headrest/armrest things on the chairs, while practical for you, are not very appealing to the demographic you are hoping to sell to, a big young family (I hope I put that nicely) :) I suppose I'm a less is more person for sure but I do hope the right buyer comes along soon. I mean... a pool, a front room for a grown teenager (or rumpus room), loads of bedrooms, two bathrooms, easy care... blah blah... surely it will be prefect for someone.
ReplyDeleteHave some coffee brewing and bake scones to get the “homely” aromas. I did it and came back after the open home and we had a buyer
ReplyDeleteThe comment about was coffee and scones was me! Anne - Palmy
ReplyDeleteYour house is lived in , by you and Stew. Don't go stressing about making it looked lived in by adding more stuff. Usually they like to see less stuff to make the house look bigger
ReplyDeleteI like the place settings at the table. That's a keeper.
ReplyDeleteNow chuck those sandals straight in the garbage. They already hurt your feet.... and will hurt god knows what.... when you fall on your face in them. Bye Bye. I see no reason to keep those around.
Why don’t you add your credit card to your wallet in your phone. I’d be lost without it. Too easy. Tap and go. Marie, Melbourne
ReplyDeleteI don't use a credit card. I have a Debit Card.
DeleteIt can be a debit card too.
DeleteYou can add debit card to phone digital wallet. Easy to do and then always have it. Love seeing the pics of Lily. Such a gorgeous stage. House looks lovely
DeleteGood point about the jar on the table.
ReplyDeleteAnd I have heard about baking, but I do not think it has to be sweets. I think it could be dinner in the crock pot. Or spiced drink in crock pot. If you do bake cookies, I suggest freezing them and saving for Xmas.
I read a couple articles on staging and the focus seems to be decluttering (which you have done) and adding softness like rugs, pillows, throws, woven coasters, baskets.
I agree with Lynda about the chair arm covers.
Another thing that occurred to me - and I assume this has already been taken care of - does your house sale info clearly specify that you are taking all the rusty bits, pots, benches, mailbox, etc from the yard with you? If I were walking thru an openhouse, I think I would worry about all that.
Vickie
Sprinkle some coffee on the elements make house smell of fresh coffee, um hang on that wont work on your new stove top. Scratch that idea.
ReplyDeleteYou should invest in some Soul Shoes leather jandals from Raglan. They'll last forever and they'll resole them.if you need. We've had them for years and yip bit hard at the beginning but wear them in the shower and boom you're away and laughing GM AND 💙💙
ReplyDeleteTaking Shape has some really nice sandals at the moment. They come in pink, purple, red and black I think - very comfy!
ReplyDeleteI would take off the white table cloth if your table can be seen without it. I guess people like "minimalist" nowadays so there's a bland kind of pallette they prefer. Not my personal preference... love your blue bathroom. We have a blue lounge but its probably not everyone's cuppa tea.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the table looks tired without the cloth on it. I will take the white tablecloth off later and see what Stew thinks. I'm starting to think I'm over thinking it too much.
DeleteI personally think the house looks great and don’t go to much effort to make it look lived in. I have never gone to a house and thought that it doesn’t look lived in. As long as it is neat and tidy then I think it is fine for open homes. People just want to make sure that it has been looked after. When the right person who loves your house come along, those things don’t matter. As you said, it might just take time for the right person who loves it to come along.
ReplyDeleteI like the table with the settings but I like the big jar in the middle too. It draws the eye to the table and lovely colours. Leave out one of your new nighties on the bed. No don't! A clean clear house I would imagine is much better for a showing. They can all imagine their own stuff in there.
ReplyDeleteI don't like jandals anymore. They really rub against my big toe. I wear birkenstocks now in the summer. More expensive but so comfortable and right in fashion up here
I wonder if removing the TV that sits in the opening near the kitchen/blue furniture should be removed during Open House? Make it look more like a sitting room. Then just have the tv in the other room that I think Stew watches when Rugby is on? Just a thought. Ky Girl
