PAVLIK BRACE ON EMILY

Our baby granddaughter Emily has Hip Dysplasia:

ABOVE:  She wasn't screaming in these two photos, but let me assure you... she was A VERY, VERY UPSET BABY last night!  She HATES being restricted by the Brace... poor wee darling.

Today:  not sure yet.... plenty of things to do around here...

ONWARD...
I was looking around the house this morning, and I felt GUILTY.  I am home all the time (well mostly) and my home is not spotless.  I should do more housework!  So I'm washing windows today... all of them.

ABOVE: almost finished this lot.... then it's on to the lounge... At least once they are all done I will feel like I've done something today, instead of sitting on me BUM ALL DAY DOING NOTHING!   (yes, my MOTHER'S rude comment is still annoying the hell out of me).

GOOEY GINGERBREAD CAKE RECIPE:

Preperation time: 20 mins

Cooking time: 1hr 10 mins

185 g (6 oz) butter, chopped

1 cup (350g/11 oz) golden syrup

3/4 cup...(140g/4 1/2oz) lightly packed soft brown sugar

1 egg, lightly beaten

1 1/2 cups (185g, 6 oz) plain flour

3/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

1 Tblsp ground ginger

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon mixed spice

2 Tblspn finely chopped glace ginger

Ginger Icing:

1 1/2 cups icing sugar

1 Tblsp milk

2 Tblsp golden syrup

30 g (1 oz) butter, softened

1 1/2 Tblsp finely chopped glace ginger

Preheat oven to 160C or 315F, Gas 2-3... Line a lightly greased 9 inch square shallow baking tin with non-stick baking paper, over-hanging two opposite sides.

Combine butter, golden syrup, sugar and 3/4 cup of water in a pan and stir over gentle heat until butter melts and sugar dissolves.

Remove from heat and let cool a bit, then add the beaten egg, mix well.

Sift the flour, soda and spices, add to mixture and beat well to remove any lumps. Stir in the glaze ginger, pour into the tin. Bake for about an hour .. or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Cool in the tin for 5 mins then turn out onto a wire rack.

Icing: beat icing sugar, milk, golden syrup and butter together. spread over the cold gingerbread cake and sprinkle with glace ginger.

When cutting a sticky cake like this use a hot, wet knife for best results.

This cake will add 10 pounds OVERNIGHT. But it's delicious!.. and freakin easy to make. If you love ginger.. you will love this cake!

Recipe posted again for Wendy.  Now I want to make it again!  Grrrrrr.

***Emily will be in the brace for a minimum of 8 weeks, there will be ultrascans done regularly to see how her hips are doing.  One step at a time... we will know if more treatment is necessary after the 8 weeks are up.

End of Day:  roast chicken and veges for dinner... oh it was so yum!  I love roast chicken with gravy!
DIET: going to blow it tonight!
nite nite.

  5. I hope she doesn't need casts, like Blondie I can remember a neighbours baby with those and it just looked so uncomfortable.

We know you don't sit on your bum all day and so what if you did, no-ones business but yours!

  6. I wore a brace early in my life. I don't remember any of it. I think technolocy has come a long way since then. Hope mama does okay with the noise!

  7. Do not let your Mother upset you - if she actually bothered to read your blog she would see that you most definately do NOT just sit around & do nothing. Your house does not have to be spotless, but I bet it is always pretty damn close most of the time. As well as keeping house you manage to produce amazing art & craft items, work part time at the Hospice shop & look after the kids!!!

  10. Aww, Sweet Emily, I hope she adjusts quickly and that the brace does it's job.
I went by that ginger cake recipe real fast 'cause I would really want to make it if I looked too close :)

  11. Poor little Emily - but its good that they picked it up now and it can corrected. I know of two friends who have had babies braced for the same condition, and they've adapted quickly, and as toddlers now you wouldn't know they had had a problem.

Do you want to come and clean my windows too while you're on a roll? Lol

I was in a brace until about two weeks before my second birthday. So I didn't walk for AGES...But on the bright side, I was able to sit from about six months old. My mum would leave me on a mat and be able to go around doing housework and what have you, and she'd come back and I wouldn't have moved!

Emily won't rememebr being in a brace (I certainly don't) and it's better than the alternative!

And on the bright side, she'll be much easier to keep an eye on if it does stay on for a while.

P.S. I'm gonna make that cake tonight! I love ginger. And your scone recipe was perfect!

  13. Poor little Emily! I can only imagine how upset she must be, not usnderstanding what's going on.

Do they think the brace will take care of it? My fingers are crossed that it does exactly what it is supposed to do.

  16. Any way Christ, What the hell does it matter to her or anyone if you did and YOU DO NOT sit on your bum all day. How freakin rude, You should have said "Shut the front Door" which is a more polite way than saying the other.

I know she is your Mum, but it is rude, and I wish people would mind their own business.

As you can tell this is one thing that riles me, when people pass judgement and make unnecessary and hurtful comments.

  19. Poor you. Mother got to you again. Me mom can get on my nerves too. Whenever she comes visit, she inspects my home for dust. I'm alright if she just cleans but she has to give a lecture for every dustball she finds! Now I go to her home instead. hahahaha

  20. Oh, poor little Emily. Hope it all works quickly and she won't have to put up with the brace too long.

  23. Just read all the comments, nice to have people care... Today so far has been ok, no screaming til she is red in the face, not alot of comfort feeding today, boys dont like the brace, Joel was not impressed and asked alot of questions. He was very worried. Oh since Im coming up on Thursday Im guessing all the cake will be gone so guess you will have to make it again so I can have some :-) And will maybe look to say til Sat... will talk to O'B, is that cool?

Does your mum sit on her butt all day at her place? It's none of her business what you do in your house! When me and boyfriend (now husband) moved in together, I warned my mother to never come into our house and whinge about how we run our household! She still does some things the old fashion way and expects daughter to waste time doing the same! (Like wash all undies by hand!) WOMBAT

Bless her little heart! Time will fly by and at least she is young and not crawling or sitting yet. I think she will adjust just fine! My girlfriend's daughter had this and she had a cast and a bar and she could even pull herself up and get around!! The ginger cake looks wonderful! I love Ginger!! ...debbie

  26. Try let your Mom's rude remarks go. Misery loves company. Oh my your cake looks so good. Think I gained a few pounds just looking at it. Hope the baby responds to this treatment.

  27. i have never heard of that.

is it something that can be corrected over time with the brace? i hope so....

  28. Poor little boo! I hope she heals fast!

I quit busting my butt cleaning everything "spotless" long ago. No one really cares and I'd just end up yelling at everyone for messing things up and stressing myself out.

  29. I hope the baby is OK.
That second picture looked at first like (gulp!!) SNOW!

  30. Oh I am so sorry little Emily has to wear that brace. My oldest daughter had to wear casts on both her legs and then a brace. Can you believe I didn't even think to take pictures! Guess I was young and dumb.

Hopefully that will be the only treatment she needs!
