I've been thinking about doing this:
We have a large, lovely lounge that we don't use that often, so I've been thinking of turning it into a bedroom/lounge for guests.
At the moment I am just THINKING about it, doing some homework on the in's and out's of how it works and so on.
Anyone had any experience of airbnb? Doing it yourself? Been to an airbnb place? Thoughts?
It could be a way of bringing in a bit of money, while still being able to stay home and do me own thing.
There is something else I'm thinking of doing too.
More personal. I am SICK TO DEATH of my fly away hair, you know, the shorter bits around the edges that stick out all over the place!
I mostly wear my hair up in a pony tail or bun, so the fly aways are always annoying me. I try to plaster them down with hair wax... but it's not ideal.
SO... I'm thinking of doing this:
ABOVE: An undercut! Probably like the picture on the left. What do you think?
Am I too old for it?
Would it suit me?
Hmmmm. I'm going to ask one of my FBG friends who has a salon. She can advise me hopefully.
ABOVE: Steve hard at work. He's cutting down a holly bush to make room for their big rabbit hutch.
Well, he has to build the hutch and get the rabbits, but both those things are happening in the next week.
They are getting two little girl rabbits from our friends Martyn and Jacqui next weekend.
They are for Bex's birthday.
She's turning 30 and will be having her Birthday Lunch here on Sunday 18th. We are looking forward to that.
Right, my plans for the day? Bugger all! Doing some more research on airbnb, and the potential haircut.
Bit of housework. Just the usual. No sewing for a few days, taking a break!
ONWARD...
10.18 am: I lay in bed this morning, just thinking about all the things I would need to do/get, IF we did do airbnb.
And I got up and made a start on moving a few things around in the house!
Of course, this is not going to happen overnight, there's a couple of big things that have to happen first.
The lounge needs A DOOR. Steve will be asked to do that me thinks.
We need a bed in there. Might just use the one Brylee has, it's only 18 months old and is a lovely bed. We can pick up another one for her easily.
I want to move the Britto cabinet out of the lounge. I am going to try and do that TODAY.
Thinking about linen. I've probably got all I need. But I will check.
And the list goes on!
Stew is going to read this and think "Here we go, she simply can't wait". He's right.
I get an idea and I run with it.
But in my defense, I have been thinking about it for a while now... it's not like I just thought about it yesterday.
Brylee and Griffin have a Teacher Only day today, so they are both home and can help me with the cabinet moves. Not that either of them want to of course. *sigh*
***GIGGLE OF THE DAY: I got an Anonymous comment, on an old post:
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRYLEE":
Surgery on dead people. What's the worst thing which
could happen?
Thanks for the giggle. *smiles*
Things are coming together with moving cabinets. Just got the actual Britto Cabinet to move now.
Of course ... to move ONE cabinet meant having to actually move 4. Musical chairs type of thing. Ya know what I mean I'm sure.
I haven't moved the Britto. Starting to read the comments and ponder.. is it a good idea or not?
Perhaps I need to think on it a bit longer? As I said earlier on, it is still in the 'thinking about it stage'.
I just got carried away with moving cabinets!
But I wanted to move them anyway, so nothing lost yet.
I just heard from the Service Manager of Canon. She is horrified to hear how long I have been without my camera, and asked for more details, so I told her all that's happened so far. Let's see how that goes! Not going to hold me breath, I fully expect it to take another 4 months!
ABOVE: I love this cabinet here, just wonder if the heat pump is too close to it? I hope not.
Lynise: Wow your self contained unit is lovely.
AND... JUST LIKE THAT... I have probably gone off the airbnb idea.
Hadn't really thought about loss of privacy, strangers walking around in my house, using my kitchen etc!
Stew's happy, he knew I would see it as a bad idea eventually, I just needed some time to think of all the implications.
Time to wind down for the day.
As I said my boss runs a bnb they have a 7 bedroom home they do silver service brekkie too "acacia waters" with your house the lawns garden's it would be ideal..
ReplyDeleteCan be a lot of waiting around for guests to check in sometimes though...
ReplyDeleteHi I would find it very invasive....people sharing the bathroom etc..also what if they come and are sick...you could catch more colds etc...lol......if you want a bit of extra income maybe you could get a small part time position somewhere ? fabric sewing shop ? teaching sewing one on one ? giftware shop ? you sound like a people person so would be good at that or even a home care job when you go to the frail elderly or a person with a disability for a couple of hours a day to help prepare a meal, personal care, outings, drs appointments etc...that is a fairly well paid position on a casual basis..I did that job for many years and loved it.
ReplyDeletePeta
I do the undercut thing. Makes it easier and the only way it sits properly. Never too old! Go for it
ReplyDeleteWe have lots of friends and relatives who run B&Bs - not AirBnB but dedicated ones. They enjoy it. I think you would enjoy it but yes, the bathroom sharing thing wouldn't be so great. If we ever did it, we'd let the visitors have sole use of our main bathroom and only use our on-suite. Perhaps you could do that?
ReplyDeleteAbout the hair?? NOOOOOOOOO....... was that loud enough? You would regret the short bits within a day and then when they start to grow you'd regret it even more. Either leave it long or get it all cut - don't get that undercut :)
I would only do airbnb if I had a separate granny flat. I would hate to have complete strangers walking through my house
ReplyDeleteI have a bit of experience on AirBNB (as a guest) and on the haircut. First, the undercut. It is nice when it is kept up. But it grows out really fast and looks shaggy. Also - when you get sick of it and want to grow it out - it takes YEARS. For your length hair - many many years! But if you keep it trimmed, it's cooler (temperaturewise) and looks nice.
ReplyDeleteI have stayed at about 6 different AirBNB's. I ALWAYS look for one where I get the whole place. So, technically speaking, I have not rented a place within someones home. I agree, the FIRST thing you need is a door. Probably with a lock, or padlock - so they feel secure leaving their belongings there. I have always had a good experience at the places I stayed - and I am sure I would be happy staying at your place. But - do you really want strangers roaming around your house? Maybe, you would have fun. You are a sociable gal. They would be in your bathroom and your kitchen. What are they allowed to use / eat/ drink? We stayed in a caboose that was on someones property. It had it's own bathroom, shower, and kitchenette. We also stayed at someones apartment. We had the whole two bedroom place. One of our best experiences was staying at a place that had a separate small place on the property, like a mother in law house, or as the person above said - a granny house. That was nice. You can always try it and see how you like it. You could close up shop simply enough if it's not your cup of tea. The one place I stayed that was not the "entire place" was a community living arrangement. There was a common kitchen and living area, but my "room" had a tiny fridge, sink, electric hot pate, a few kitchen things like cups and silverware, and it's own toilet and shower. It had a padlock on the door so I could lock it when I left, and a lock on the inside too.
I have been doing air bnb for just over a year now and love it but the space is away from my part of the property with its own entrance and no shared spaces.

I have stayed at other air bnb places both in nz and also over seas which is why I decided I would like to try it myself. There are so many options available ( in all price brackets) and the main thing is being accurate in the description. I once rented one place that wasn’t clear on how many rooms were available, I thought I was renting two rooms but ended up with two completely seperate rentals, so we lost money as the other unit was not needed or used. ( all because the wording was confusing and made it sound like they were renting each space separately ( ie, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, one lounge etc) do
ReplyDeleteI booked two bedrooms plus one each of the other spaces and ended up with two of every thing.
I didn't realise you could do Air BnB while in-situ. I thought they were only vacant places. There you go. Maybe you can contact some other "share" house landlords and ask questions?
ReplyDeleteActually after reading the comments - do you realise that at an Air B&B the guests will use you kitchen? Our friends ran one from their home and also we visited them when they stayed in one up here - they had the use of the entire kitchen for meals and breakfast. How would that suit you? I know I'd hate it but other seem OK with it.
ReplyDeleteGlad u have gone off the idea Chris. I've heard some real horror stories about airBnB
ReplyDeleteMy hair is driving me nuts too some days I'm tempted to go Telly Savalias style 'shaved bald' "who loves ya baby"
Felicity
