WHAT DO YOU PAY?

Yesterday I was told to turn our air conditioning on, to keep us cool.

I probably should have said this sooner...  I don't like air conditioning, as I always then end up COLD!  Plus of course, yes, I am used to conserving power!

Old habits die hard.

But here's a question for you.

WHAT do you pay on average, per week, for your power?  We pay between $30-35 a week, pretty much year round.  There isn't much difference between summer and winter, as I don't turn on heating/cooling.

I really would like to know if our power consumption is 'normal', high or low.

Today we will take down things that are screwed on the walls in the kitchen and lounge.  Then we will leave moving the furniture into the centre of the rooms until tomorrow.  Stew can roll up the big rug in the lounge and put it in the garage.  I was going to do it yesterday, then I remembered just how heavy it is, and thought, yeah nah.  lol

It is certainly a huge upheaval getting the house interior painted, but once it's done I will be able to relax.  It won't need doing again for freakin' years I hope.

ONWARD...

I know it's 'VALENTINES DAY'... we don't 'do' Valentines Day.  Never have.  We love each other, and don't need a particular, heavily commercialised day to show it.  Each to their own.

ABOVE:  Where has all the 'character' gone?

ABOVE:  Oh there it is!

The garage is full.   And hopefully it won't all be in there for too long.
Not much left to do tomorrow except move the main furniture into the middle of the room.

Now... we are just killing time until we go out for a few things.  We need a non slip mat for the shower, so Stew is 'safe' after his operation.  I want a small spray bottle of weed killer for random weeds that pop up and yeah, a couple of other random things.  We will have lunch out as per usual.  Might not get Seafood Chowder again though.  That wasn't fun.

1.33 pm, and we are home after a good, productive outing.  We got everything on our list, had a lovely lunch then came home.  The traffic at The Base was crazy.

Our river is swollen, but not as high as we have seen it before.  The paths down by our Community Centre are not under water... yet.

We are now going to have a relaxing afternoon, twiddling our thumbs.

Sorry to have missed your visit Lacy... thanks for visiting!  lol

Midnight:  We have had a lazy afternoon/evening.

I even had a nap.

Time to sign off for the day.  Catch ya tomorrow.

  1. You can't ask others to say what they pay as it's totally different in NZ v Austraila or US. Perhaps the better question is daily usage in kWh. Also for NZ users I presume you mean total including GST? Our latest bill shows $168 including GST (411 kWh) for a month. That includes being away for three days but the fridges were running. It also includes aircon on most days and charging our car for a month (equal to Approx $100 if petrol). Total kWh without car charging would be around 300 kWh. Also, if you get too cold with aircon on it means it's set too low. It should maintain a good, steady temperature.

Happy Saturday. We pay between $30-$35 per week. It's just the 2 of us now. We have a heat pump and a woodburner and with our electricity provider we get free power from 9am to 5pm on weekends so we crank the heatpump on then if needed for heating/cooling. Interestingly, our power bills have decreased significantly since moving from the North to the South Island. Power charges seem a lot cheaper down here. Paula

  3. We have our heat pump on 24/7 all year round at 22 degrees and our powet bills range between $125 - $180 per month but usually around $140. That is for 3 bedroom house in Christchurch with 2 adults (and no double glazing in our doors or windows). I love a steady comfortable temperature. Have a great day ahead 😀

I don’t use aircon but do use the heater a little in winter. In Australia I pay an average over the year of $70 week.

Weinvested in solar panels a couple of years ago obviously expensive and at our age and stage of life never going to recoup the cost of them by . However that wasn’t the plan. The plan was that our electricity bills would be cheaper when we retire. In saying that our electricity bill for the whole of January because of the sell back to the company was $4.60 We’ve had visitors staying and this month our electricity bill is $41. We don’t have the battery. We just have the 4 kW inverter but we’re selling back on average $60 a month after our own consumption Obviously this changes in the winter but it actually doesn’t need sun shining on it to create solar energy looks like just having a bright day after a frost works as well. PS I was against getting it but him indoors was all for it and it’s sort of has worked out. Margaret

Stew will probably need a shower seat for a few weeks after his operation (I did but still use it) but the Occupational Therapist will advise on all that. Audrey

    1. We have a white plastic chair in the bathroom already, and he is going to use that, placed on top of a non slip mat in the shower.

      Good thinking, Audrey

  7. Years ago you could ask for the low user rate if applicable, also contact do free power after 9pm and all weekend could have air con on at night for comfortable sleeps if hot.
Oh how bare the room looks, hope there’s fine weather for fast drying and airing out of paint fumes.

I agree with Lynda. You should never get ‘cold’ or ‘hot’ with air conditioning on. Find the comfortable setting for you and you will not have to struggle with the heat or the cold as you do mention in your very cold winter months that you are freezing and hate the cold but still do not use your air conditioning/heat pump. 🤷‍♀️ in our research air conditioning costs are very very reasonable when compared to other forms of cooling and especially heating. I still think, and totally respect, that you have a deep seeded conscience that by using the electricity you will end up with a huge bill. It’s your comfort, your choice. Have a great weekend

  9. Ours is about 30 per week. 3 adults. 3 bdrm 2 bath house with windy windows and no heating apart from fan heater and no air con. We've always had cheapish power.

Hi, Stew will probably need a toilet chair to put over the toilet as well....we have our heating and cooling on all year round...if needed...I hate being too cold....I don't really care what the bill is...our summer bills are cheaper than winter bills over here in Australia....Peta

BTW, Chris, does your plastic chair have arms because Stew will probably need them to be able to sit down safely. I assume he will be using crutches for the first couple of weeks post-op and that would be hard to manage in the shower. We were lucky in our bathroom in the retirement village because our toilet was higher than usual which was a great help, Audrey

We built 26+ years ago, when we were in our late 30’s. I had a high handicapped toilet put in our bathroom and handrails built into the shower. Also wide doorways, just in case. Very glad we did.

  12. Before you rush out and buy lots of extras for Stew's recovery perhaps wait and see how he is? I never needed anything extra and found standing in the shower to be easy (sitting in a shower and then trying to get up would be more difficult I think). I had no issue getting on and off a normal toilet either. Remember you still have the full use of your good leg. My main issue was pain relief and the dreadful effects of tramadol. Once I had my pain relief changed to a different type I was fine. Everyone's experience is different though, I realise that.

You can hire aids...Stew is a lot taller than you and has further to go down to a chair, the physio at the hospital will assess Stew after the operation for his particular needs....

    2. I agree... if anything hire, not buy. A grab handle near a toilet will never go amiss as we age either.

  13. I can not comment on power bills on account of our KILN firing. Our bill has a little graph showing "our use" compared to "Our neighbors use". The difference is extreme!

Our bills are quarterly. It’s usually about $600, but we have a big double story house. And 5 fridges…😳 crazy, I know.

  16. We use heat pump and air conditioner to be fair probably more air conditioner, clothes dryer most days, 2 old freezers and fridge freezer. 3 bedroom house dbl glazed, carpet on most floors. We pay $75 a fortnight year round often in credit but like to have that in kitty (my electric Christmas lights dnt seem to add any extra to the bill. Hope you are happy with the painter work.
